    Himring Series: Maedhros

Quiet days are rare at Himring, and they are always a blessing.

When the winds are merciful and the clouds drift high, soft, like a young partridge's feathers, the soldiers of Himring can enjoy a moment of fleeting peace. Though many of them still gather on the castle grounds, restless and eager to prove themselves useful. They march, and joust, and jest. For they know that the Lord of Himring is watching.

Lord Maedhros holds dear the solitude of his chambers, but on days like theese he chooses to sit by the window, where the light of the day shines on the many papers spread over his dark desk. There's letters, and many - some, from his brothers, on their recent troubles, and more from the chieftains of men and mountain folk, and then a few from The High King, ever concerning himself with things that needn't be his concern. There's papers, and records, and more. Lord's work never ends.

Lord Maedhros works in silence. And if, by chance, a servant finds their way into his rooms thinking them empty, he doesn't answer.

At times, however, the rythm of his thoughts escapes him, and Maedhros simply listens. On the tall black towers of the fortress the Feanarion banners whisper in the wind. And the chatter of his people drifts to his window, distant, yet somehow clear. And his gaze wanders to the mountains, their tops still covered in snow, to the hills, their bass grasses running far towards the grey horizon. Do they cross Doriath?

    Do they reach Hithlum?

Well. Such thoughts are nonsense. He returns to his letters.

Author's note: Maedhros is my favourite character of The Legendarium, and I often find myself thinking of his fate, his valiant deeds and his tragic death. Thus, Himring is my favourite place to escape to in the vast world of Arda. I'm planning to do a series of ambients, focusing on different areas of the fortress at different times.

    Come, escape with me.
